As the days get shorter and the weather turns colder, is there anything better than curling up in a cosy living room?

We certainly don’t think so! Tucked away from the rain, feet up on a sink-in sofa with the softest of soft blankets and a candle crackling beside you – absolute autumnal bliss.

1. Choose a cosy colour scheme

First things first: your colour palette. Before you turn to sofas, coffee tables, and accessories, get your paint brushes out and think about how to make a living room cosy using colours.

Earthy neutrals make for a classic cosy combination; why not try pairing a warm beige with stone or muted orange for a natural feel? If that’s not your thing, turn to colours that scream snug to you – dark forest greens, lovely lilacs, and deep blues can all be calming and cosy when done right!

Top tip: For a cosy yet couture feel, try drenching your space in your colour of choice. Painting every wall and ceiling in one tone may feel a little daunting but easily creates a cocoon feeling that’s perfect for the cosiest of rooms. Searching for a softer approach? Colour block your walls with a dark colour on the lower half and lighter on top – a great way to feel snug without overpowering a smaller space.

2. Pick a snug sofa set-up

What does cosy mean to you? Is it alone time with a book and a brew, or an evening snuggled up with the whole family? Maybe it’s relaxing while catching up with friends or watching a film with your four-legged companion.

Whatever your particular brand of snug is, choose a sofa set-up that suits both your space and lifestyle. A cuddler sofa is a must-have for a cosy reading corner, while a U-shaped sofa with a slot-in footstool makes the perfect curl-up spot when friends and family are over.

Classic cosiness, of course, points to a fabric sofa, though that doesn’t mean you can’t transform your leather sofa to a suitably snug seat! Scatter cushions and blankets should be your best friends when setting up a cosy corner – layer plenty over a chaise end for the best seat in the house.

3. Bring the outdoors in

The humble houseplant is one of our favourite ideas for cosy living rooms. Green thumb or not, a touch of the outdoors inside is a surefire way to bring some country cottage cosiness into your space – and boost your mood, too!

If your daily to-do list could do without a watering routine, then plants like string of hearts (Ceropegia woodii) or devil’s ivy (Epipremnum aureum) are the best choice. Simply pop them out of direct sunlight and keep the watering to a minimum.

Biophilic design not your thing? Introduce a rustic touch with furniture crafted from natural materials, like a wooden coffee table or wicker basket overflowing with throws. Better yet, add comfort underfoot with a faux fur rug with sheep’s wool-esque curls.

4. Light up the room

Candles! Candles! Candles! Nothing says cosy living room like the crackle of a candle in the colder months. Even better when accompanied by a calming scent like lavender or sandalwood.

For those who don’t fancy themselves candle connoisseurs, there are plenty of other cosy living room ideas with lighting to choose from. Warm lamps on side tables are ideal for reading, or – if you want to go all-out cottage fairycore – drape some string lights across the wall in your choice of colour for an option that doesn’t take up any valuable surface area.

Top tip: Whatever style of lighting you opt for, choose warm, soft bulbs to keep your snug sanctuary feeling relaxed.

5. Colour it with life

With the essentials out the way, it’s time to make your cosy living room your own. You want your living room to tell a story of your personality, get-togethers on special occasions, and movie nights with friends – lived in and loved.

If your daily to-do list could do without a watering routine, then plants like string of hearts (Ceropegia woodii) or devil’s ivy (Epipremnum aureum) are the best choice. Simply pop them out of direct sunlight and keep the watering to a minimum.

If you’ve got a box full of keepsakes like concert tickets, receipts from dates with your partner, or cards, why not try arranging a few together and framing them for display? Get them out of the stuffy cardboard box under your bed and make them a feature of your new most relaxing room.

Cosy home FAQs

Warmth is the way forward in your cosy colour palette. Choose warm neutrals like beige or dove grey as a base, then accent with deeper browns or rich shades of green, purple, or orange.

Of course, cosy isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution; if silver makes you feel snug, then silver it is! Stick to a colour palette that’s calming to you.

While similar – and both certainly worth striving for in your living room – cosy and comfortable have some differences.

Cosy is defined as ‘comfortable and pleasant, especially (of a building) because of being small and warm’, while a room that’s comfortable ‘provides a pleasant feeling and does not give you any physical problems’. That means a comfortable living room isn’t necessarily cosy, but a cosy living room is always comfortable!

All our cosy living room ideas work just as well in a large space as a small space, but there’s more to consider when working with a big living room. If extra square footage is making your set-up feel less snug and more exposed, try to create comfy, closed-off zones in your space. A corner sofa is perfect for this – position your sofa in the centre of the room to have one side create a partition, making your seating area feel more cocooned and comfy.

Other ideas for cosy living rooms on a larger scale include adding a wide rug to break up the floor space and creating a snug in one corner of the room.
