Are extra firm mattresses good for you?

If you’re a sleeper who needs unyielding support that’ll stand the test of time, an extra firm mattress is ideal.

The firmer-than-firm feeling offers robust support and isolates movement in the night – meaning your partner can toss and turn as much as they like! Plus, the denser mattress is great for back pain, helping to relieve aching pressure points and align your posture while you sleep, and great for providing consistent support to heavier sleepers.

Stomach sleepers, too, should give extra firm mattresses a try. A stronger surface means you’re less likely to sink into your mattress and misalign your spine while sleeping.

Is a firm mattress better than an extra firm mattress?

Umm-ing and ahh-ing between an extra firm and firm mattress? The right choice depends on how much support you need, your sleeping preferences, and your sleeping position.

Both extra firm and firm mattresses are top of the charts when it comes to support, offering a robust feel with little give. If your sleeping style requires minimal sink-in softness, opt for extra firm, as firm mattresses have a bit more cushioning.

Committed front sleepers can benefit from extra firmness to keep their spine aligned through the night. Those who toss and turn every now and then, however, might choose a firm mattress, allowing for some relief on shoulder and hip pressure points when they roll on one side.

What size extra firm mattress do I need?

It might sound obvious, but you’ll need a mattress size that matches your bed. That means if you’re sleeping like royalty on a super king size bed, you’ll need a super king size mattress to go with it.

At DFS, we’ve got a mattress for everyone in our collection. Snoozing sprawlers can spread out to their hearts’ content on a super king or king size mattress, with plenty of room to starfish for solo sleepers and couples alike.

Slightly smaller space? Our double mattresses and small double mattresses are perfect for cosying up in a more compact room or for kitting out your guest bedroom. Plus, we have a fantastic range of single mattresses and kids’ mattresses for growing bodies.

Still not sure which size makes sense? Check out our mattress buying guide for more advice.

How do I care for my extra firm mattress?

Extra firm mattresses need the same amount of care and cleaning as any other mattress.

One of the best ways to keep your mattress fresher for longer is to air it out regularly – that means stripping the bedding back and letting it breathe! Airing a new mattress daily is ideal, but keeping the practice up as often as you can for as long as you can will keep your mattress in top condition night after night.

Tackle any spills or splashes as soon as they happen with a clean cloth. Better yet, a good mattress protector will stop any morning brew mishaps soaking into your mattress. It’s also a great idea to clean your mattress with a soft brush whenever it’s bedding washing day to stay on top of any dust or debris build up.
